Workout:
CrossFit-

4 rounds of
50 double unders (jump rope goes under you twice in one jump)
21 kettlebell swings- 25 lbs.
21 wall ball- 10 lbs.

Time- 30:??
That was a super tough workout cardio wise. The double unders are so tiring! I could manage 10 or so in a row the first rounds, but the last rounds I could only manage 5 in a row before I had to stop and catch my breath. WOW!

Food Log:
Breakfast 1- glass of almond milk with sugar free Nesquik
Breakfast 2- scrambled egg with 3 tablespoons of salsa, 2 slices of bacon
Snack- grapes
Lunch- My Fit Foods- Charbroiled Chicken Delight (medium)
Snack- baby carrots
Dinner- Los Cucos- Chicken Ixtapa- chicken breast covered with tomatoes, onions, cheese and grilled veggies instead of rice and beans, 1.5 flour tortillas, chips, salsa
I knew that I wouldn't be able to resist the chips and salsa, but I did make a good choice with the veggies instead of rice and beans. I also got a chicken breast instead of enchiladas or a chile relleno or a chimichanga. I should've asked the waiter to keep the flour tortillas, but I love them and they were yummy!
No workout today.

Breakfast 1- almond milk with sugar free Nesquik
Breakfast 2- 3 slices of bacon and grapes
Snack- raisins and walnuts
Lunch- My Fit Foods- Ginger Chicken Delight- medium
Snack- carrots, grapes, celery, banana
Dinner- Chicken Posole
I stayed for a baby shower at school and resisted the sandwiches, chips and queso, and the CAKE! I ate the veggies instead.
Not sure how I feel about resisting all that stuff. Part of me thinks I'm being silly and should've just enjoyed myself, but the other part of me wants to prove to myself that I can resist it. I told myself no rice, bread, pasta, or sugar this week until Friday when I have a cupcake to celebrate my birthday (yes I know my birthday is Saturday, but we'll celebrate at school on Friday). I was afraid that if I gave in then I'd go on a cake binge, but that's silly because I don't have any cake at home, so I should've just had a piece! Ugh...
Workout:

warm up with lunges, frankensteins

5 deadlifts- 115 lbs.
13 push ups on knees
9 box jumps- 16 inch box (jump up, step down)
12 rounds + 2 deadlifts
Yowza! That was TOUGH. I was dripping with sweat the whole time. Glad to be done with it, but even happier I did it!

May 13 - May 14
Food Log:
I haven't had any refined sugar this week, but I have had some grains the last 2 days. Thursday I had a teeny tiny piece of pizza and a teeny tiny egg roll at the food tasting, and 1.5 saltine crackers that Kate didn't eat. Friday I had half an english muffin from a breakfast sandwich brought to me by the PE teachers because today was Field Day.
I haven't really been that hungry at all lately. Not sure what's up with that considering I've started working out more, so I should be even hungrier than before. I hate forcing myself to eat, but I need to if I'm going to be working out!
No workout Thursday- Fashion show and food tasting at school.
Friday Workout:
Crossfit-
Max Turkish Get-ups with barbell
1-1-1-1-1
15, 20, 25 (f), 25 (R)
Ugh...not a fan of turkish get ups. Not to mention I was doing them with skinned knees from push ups Tursday. My knees were burning and bleeding while I was doing them. Not fun. I think I could've done more if we'd been using a kettlebell instead of a barbell. Oh well
10 Rowing Sprints- 100 meters
Ranged from 21-21.7 seconds
10 strict pull ups with blue band

I hate overhead squats. I can’t do them to save my life. I’m not sure what the problem is, but I’ll just have to keep practicing. It’s so bad that I have to set up my own little bar to do them by myself because I can’t even use a regular sized bar!
I did enjoy the workout though. Even with the overhead squats. They sucked and my shoulders got really tired, but we only had to do 30 of them. I enjoy any workout that includes running, even though I’m slow and pathetic right now! The bright spot in my workout was the fact that I didn’t finish last! I finished the push press about the same time as 2 others, but I pushed myself on the last 3 laps of the run and beat them. I did use lighter weights than they did, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t just as hard for me. I left feeling good and excited to go back again today.

May 5-8
I had high hopes of recording my food and workouts here, but there's been no time! This week was super busy with 5 swim team practices, 3 softball practices, and 2 softball games this week. It will calm down this week now that Maddie's regular season softball team is finished, so hopefully I'll have more time.
This past week was a sugar filled week and boy has my tummy been feeling it. I baked my mom's Mother's Day cake at the beginning of the week because I knew I wouldn't have time later in the week (and I read that freezing them locks in the moisture). Of course I had left over cake batter and I couldn't let it go to waste so I baked extra cakes and have been snacking on cake every day this week! My body is not happy. Next week will be a sugar free, grain free week to get myself back on track and feeling better. After that I'm going to add in some whole grains and see how those affect me.
Along with the busy week came hardly any workouts. I hoped to drag myself out of bed on Thursday to workout before school, but I just can't get up to do it. I also planned to workout Friday, but got busy on my mom's cake and didn't want to stop.
Oh well, next week is a new week! Off to eat some Mexican food! :)

Snack- left over vegetables
Lunch- chicken salad, fruit salad
Snack- Lara Bar, lemon
Dinner- Sonic ched'r peppers with ranch, tater tots with cheese, jr. frito chili cheese wrap, and brownies
I couldn't resist the temptation to buy brownie mix while we were at Target. I wouldn't have even walked down the aisle, but we were out of Nesquik and it was on that aisle. I will give the rest to my mom and dad tomorrow!
Workout:
BBS at Lifetime- bis, tris, squats, lunges, deadlift, row, chest press, calf raises, planks, shoulder press; 30 minutes on elliptical
Doctor said 2 weeks on elliptical before running. It's been 2 weeks, but I've only been on the elliptical twice! I don't think that's what he meant. I'm shooting for a total of 10 3o minute sessions on the elliptical before I start a run/walk thing. 2 down, 8 to go!

To Eat Grains or Not to Eat Grains?
Most people hear the word carbs and think pasta, bread, cereal, rice, oats. When people see that I'm avoiding grains, they ask me why I don't eat carbs. I do eat carbs, I just try to make sure most of my carbs are from fruits and vegetables. Not because I think I'm fat or because I'm trying to lose weight, but because I'm trying to be a heatlhier person. See this article from Whole 9 for reasons to avoid grains.
It never occured to me that grains may not be good for you until I joined CrossFit. I'd heard about The Paleo Diet for Athletes, which is a book written for endurance athletes (triathletes, marathoners, etc.) who want to follow a Paleo diet, but also compete in long distance events. I thought it was crazy. How can you run, bike, and swim for a long time without eating bread and pasta?! There was no way I was giving up my pasta, bread, and oatmeal!
Fast forward 3 years to my non-triathlete, CrossFitting self and now I see walking, talking examples of what a Paleo diet can do for you (and some seriously hard work and good genes). Many of the top CrossFit athletes eat Paleo, so you figure if it works for them, then it could work for me, right? Well, I still needed more convincing, so I started reading. I read tons and tons of articles on the internet and for every article you find that says why grains are bad, you find another that says grains are essential. What should I believe?
I'd heard of people doing a 30 day challenge or a 14 day challenge to go without grains, dairy, and anything else non-Paleo to see how they start to feel and to also see what happens when the challenge is over and they begin adding those foods back in. I started by elimnating my morning milk and most dairy products to see what happened. Immediately I noticed the white spots that I get in my throat were gone. Hmm...maybe there is something to this Paleo diet.
That convinced me to try to eliminate grains to see what happened. I decided I would go 2 weeks without grains and sugar and then add them back in to see what happened. I made it about a week and a half but that was long enough for me to see a difference when I added them back in. I noticed I felt bloated and really tired after eating them. If you read my Paleoish post on the Family of Four blog you know I continued my experiment and went Monday-Friday without grains and sugar, then on weekends would give in. I noticed a huge difference that Monday morning in the way I felt.
What am I going to do now that I know the difference it makes? Well, I'm not going to give up grains and sugar completely, but I'm going to try to limit my intake. I love them, but I'm trying to find alternatives, especially to the sugary sweets. I'm also going to start adding back in whole grains to see if I have a better reaction to those than the refined grains I added back in. I think it's all about moderation.
